In The March of Events – 04

Sarada Devi’s day began between three and four in the morning, before other people were awake. Here is a picture of her life on an average day. She went to the Ganges for her bath. Her companions were fishwives, who also bathed at that time, leaving their baskets on the steps of the Nahabat. Sarada Devi talked to them. After their bath they returned home. Taking their baskets with them, and Sarada Devi hurried to her room to avoid being seen by others. At night the fishermen sang as they caught fish. Sarada Devi listened to their songs. One morning, while going into the water in the darkness, she almost stepped on a crocodile lying near the bank. When the Master heard about it, he asked her not to go the river without a light. She spent about an hour and a half in prayer and meditation. Then she started cooking, which was a complicated affair. Afterwards she would rub Sri Ramakrishna’s body with oil before his bath. This, however, did not happen everyday, especially when his male disciples were present. Next she took his midday meal to his room and personally watched over his eating. She often diverted his mind with light talk so that he night not fall into samadhi, which frequently happened without any warning. It was she alone who could make him take his meals without such spiritual disturbances. After he finished his mean, Sarada Devi returned to her room and took a little refreshment. Then she prepared betel leaf for the Master and the devotees. At that time she would often sing in a vice so low that people outside the room did not know she was singing. She had a musical voice and Sri Ramakrishna encouraged her and his niece Lakshmi to sing. The latter afterwards became an expert singer. At one o’clock a near-by factory blew its whistle, which Sri Ramakrishna’s mother called Krishna’s flute played at Vaikuntha,1 (1 The celestial abode of Vishnu. Krishna is His human embodiment.) and Sarada Devi sat down to her own midday meal.
