In The March of Events – 11

Golap Sundari Devi, addressed afterwards by the Master’s devotees as Golap-Ma, was born in an orthodox brahmin family, though she herself cherished liberal ideas. Her married life was not a happy one. Her husband died young, leaving her a son and a daughter. The son soon followed his father and her daughter expired shortly after her marriage. Weighed down by these misfortunes, Golap-Ma turned her attention to the inner life. While seeking spiritual solace she met Yogin-ma, who lived in the neighbourhood, and she took her to Sri Ramakrishna. Golap-Ma unburdened herself to the Master and burst into tears. Introducing her to Sarada Devi, he said: ‘Give her a lot of food to fill her stomach. That will assuage her grief.’ He told Golap-Ma about the transitoriness of worldly happiness and exhorted her to love God alone. One day he said to Sarada Devi: ‘Keep your eyes on this brahmin woman. She will live with you permanently.’ Golap-Ma loved orderliness, but she possessed a sharp tongue. Sarada Devi once said of her: ‘Golap’s mind is very pure; it is never ruffled. She does not know what pride or vanity is.’
