Holy Mother By Swami Nikhilananda: 100
In The March of Events – 12
Lakshmimani, affectionately called by the Master’s devotees Lakshmi-Didi, who has already been mentioned several times, was Sri Ramakrishna’s niece, the daughter of Rameswar. Exceptionally intelligent and possessed of a prodigious memory, she was reserved even at an early age and spoke only to her near relatives. Though her formal education did not go far, she could read in Bengali the Ramayana, the Mahabharata, and other books of Hindu mythology. At the age of twelve she was married, but Sri Ramakrishna prophesied her early widowhood. One day, soon after marriage, her husband left the house in search of a job and was never seen again. After twelve years, according the Hindu tradition, Lakshmi considered herself a widow. At the age of fourteen she came to Dakshineswar and began to live with Sarada Devi in the latter’s small room in the Nahabat. Lakshmi was initiated by Sri Ramakrishna. She later developed something of a masculine nature, with which the Master did not interfere. Sarada Devi once remarked: ‘Lakshmi used to sing and dance before the Master, imitating professional musicians. He said to me: “That is her nature, but you must not imitate her and lose your womanly modesty.”’
