These lines I like the most in Gauri-Maa's reply to Thakur: "Those who are in distress may pray to You, But when You are distressed, it is Radha You call upon with Your flute."

In The March of Events – 14

During her second visit the Master introduced her to Sarada Devi. From that time on she lived now and then with Sarada Devi at the Nahabat and frequently visited the Master, whom she regarded as her father and mother. She prepared various delicacies for the Master and fed him with great devotion. In the Nahabat she often sang devotional songs in her melodious voice, which made Sri Ramakrishna go into samadhi. One day Sri Ramakrishna saw Gauri-Ma gathering flowers from the garden and said: ‘Well, Gauri, I am pouring water on the earth; you knead the clay.’ Explaining this cryptic remark, he asked her to work for the welfare of Indian women, who were in a sad plight. When she told him that she would like to train some girls in the solitude of the Himalayas, he replied: ‘No, no! You must work in this very town. You have had enough of spiritual practice. Now dedicate your life to the service of women. They are suffering dreadfully.’ Eventually she fulfilled the Master’s wish.

Though a disciple of Sri Ramakrishna, Gauri-Ma often manifested greater love for Sarada Devi. One day the Master asked jokingly, in Sarada Devi’s presence, whom she loved more, himself or her. She rose to the occasion and answered in a song:

‘O Krishna, Player of the flute, surely You are not greater than Radha:1 (1 The consort of Sri Krishna)

Those who are in distress may pray to You, But when You are distressed, it is Radha You call upon with Your flute.’

Sarada Devi was naturally embarrassed and pressed Gauri’s hand. The Master laughed and went away. Gauri-Ma often experienced spiritual moods at Dakshineswar.
