Holy Mother By Swami Nikhilananda: 109
In The March of Events – 21
Though Sri Ramakrishna and Sarada Devi sometimes did not see each other for a long period of time, in spite of their living within seventy-five feet of each other, and though because of his constantly dwelling on a higher plane of consciousness he was forgetful of the world and his body, yet he was not indifferent about her welfare. On the contrary, he kept a close watch on her health and comfort. One day, coming to know about her having headache, he repeatedly asked Ramlal: ‘Why has she a headache?’
Sri Ramakrishna called Sarada Devi’s room, with its porch covered by bamboo mats, a ‘cage’. Often Lakshmi shared the room with her. The Master jokingly called them a pair of parakeets. When the food-offering from the Kali temple was brought to his room he would say to Ramlal: ‘The birdies are in the cage. Give them some fruit and grain.’ Sometimes even his intimate disciples – not having seen the Mother – took his joke literally.
