In The March of Events – 26

It may be remembered that at the time of Sri Ramakrishna’s marriage, his mother had borrowed some ornaments for Sarada Devi which had to be returned soon after. At that time the mother-in-law promised that the Master would give her more precious ornaments. At Dakshineswar he did in fact provide her with these. He said to Hriday that she was an incarnation of the Goddess Saraswati1, (1The Goddess of Wisdom and Music. She is a manifestation of the Divine Mother. One of the hymns used by devotees in saluting her is the following: ‘Hail to Thee, Goddess, the essence of all beings, moving and unmoving. A pearl necklace hangs on Thy boson; Thou holdest in Thy hands a vina and a book. Hail Mother, I salute Thee.’) who loves ornaments, and asked him to procure some for her. One day garrulous Golap-Ma said to Sarada Devi, ‘Manomohan’s1 mother (1 Manomohan was a householder devotee of Sri Ramakrishna) asked me the other day whether, since the Master was a perfect example of renunciation, it looked well that you should adorn your body with so much gold.’ At once Sarada Devi removed practically all the ornaments.
