In The March of Events – 29

Though Sarada Devi obeyed Sri Ramakrishna absolutely in most things, nevertheless in certain matters she exercised her own judgement. During her earlier days at Dakshineswar she lived practically alone in the Nahabat. A maidservant occasionally helped her with her domestic duties, and a certain old woman visited her now and then. This woman had not led a moral life in her younger days, but in later years she turned to religion. One day the Master said to Sarada Devi: ‘Why do you allow her in your room?” He told her of the woman’s past. Sarada Devi said: ‘That may be, but now she talks only about God and spiritual matters.’ ‘But,’ the Master insisted, ‘whatever she may be now, she was once a prostitute. Why should you speak to her? Goodness gracious!’ Sarada Devi remained unmoved. She could not let a person down who was repentant and sought her grace. As we shall see later, she never deviated from this attitude.
