Whenever the opportunity arose Sri Ramakrishna gave Sarada Devi spiritual instruction. One evening he spoke at length to her and Lakshmi about love of God. As they were about to take leave of him he said to his niece: ‘Discuss what you have heard from me with your aunt tonight. You have seen cows eating grass in the field during the daytime; at night they chew the cud. Therefore go over with your aunt what you have learnt now. Then you will not forget my words.’ Many years later, when someone read to Sarada Devi from The Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna, she said: ‘He used to give me such fine instruction. If I had only known how to write, I would have noted down his words.’
