Spiritual Practices – 08

She was reticent about her spiritual experiences. Though she had many visions, she did not stress their value very much. About the essence of spiritual realization she once said to her devotees: ‘Through realization the mind becomes pure, and through that pure mind one obtains enlightenment.’

When Sarada Devi first came to Dakshineswar she had most probably not experienced samadhi, though later she attained even to nirvikalpa samadhi. 1 (1 The highest spiritual experience, in which a man realizes his complete oneness with God and the universe.) But she frequently witnessed Sri Ramakrishna’s deep ecstasies and also the spiritual moods of his devotees. Watching Gauri-Ma’s ecstasies, Sarada Devi, too wanted to experience them and, through Lakshmi, requested the Master to fulfil her desire. The Master said in reply: ‘Why does she wish to have ecstasies? Gauri has a masculine nature. But she [referring to Sarada Devi] should suppress her spiritual emotions.’ Then quoting a proverb he said: ‘A helpless woman develops strength by remaining helpless. That way alone she succeeds. A woman should lead a self-effacing life. Bashfulness is her religion. If she loses it people speak ill of her.’
