God’s love for man – unselfish, unsolicited, and undeserved – has been stressed by the mystics and prophets of all religions. The nearest example of this love in human experience is the love of a mother for her children. A mother’s love and sacrifice qualify her spiritually to stand above all other relatives. A wife’s love may fluctuate with the sweetness upon her. But the mother’s affection, by its very nature, grows deeper as the need grows and follows the beloved child even to hell. A yearning love that can never refuse us, a benediction that for ever abides with us, a presence from which we cannot grow away, a heart in which we are always safe, a sweetness of unfathomed, a bond unbreakable, holiness without a shadow – all these indeed, and more, constitute motherhood.
