Spiritual Practices – 18

Sri Ramakrishna made Sarada Devi a symbol of God’s Motherhood because through her immaculate body and mind the divine Shakti manifested herself to the fullest degree in modern times. His action served two important purposes. By worshipping God as the omnipotent, compassionate, and all-forgiving Mother, an aspirant develops fearlessness and comes closer to reality. By seeing God in a woman he gradually sublimates his carnal desires. Carnality, which seeks fulfillment through physical relationship with a member of the opposite sex, is one of the deadly enemies with which spiritual seekers, both men and woman, have to wrestle. A woman can easily conquer it by regarding a man as her child. She is, in essence, the mother of all men, no matter what other relationships society may sanction or speak of. A man, too, easily subdues his lust by seeing in a woman the symbol of motherhood. But alas, an ignorant person regards woman as an object to satisfy his physical appetite. He craves her body and pushes away the Divinity in her. Thus he becomes entangled in the coils of the world. If he worships the Divinity in her, he is blessed with the nectar of immortality.
