Spiritual Practices – 21

An incarnation is a God-man, a blending of Divinity and humanity. He descends on earth, covering Himself with a thin veil of maya or cosmic ignorance, through which he now and then gets a glimpse of His divine nature and mission. Of His own accord He assumes some of the imperfections of humanity and acts like a man with regard to hunger, thirst, sickness, and the other characteristics of bodily existence. Like a man, again, He prays, meditates, worships, and observes spiritual disciplines so as to rend the self-imposed veil of maya. His spiritual struggles resembles that of a man because He Himself has assumed a human form. Otherwise there would seem to be no purpose in His being incarnated. A man cannot understand transcendental truth unless it is expressed through human actions. Once the veil is pierced, the Incarnation becomes fully aware of Himself. Yet even then he practises disciplines to set an example for others. His meditation and worship before He is conscious of His divinity serve the same purpose, for He does not need them for his own liberation.
