A God-man practises disciplines most intensely, condensing the efforts of many ordinary lives into one, because it is His mission to bring about the liberation of many and to arouse the spiritual consciousness of humanity. We know what a protracted struggle is necessary for an ordinary man to develop even a small amount of god-consciousness. This explains the superhuman renunciation, austerity, yearning, purity, and self-control manifested in the short life of a God-man. His ecstasies and intimate communion with the godhead make Him appear almost abnormal. To be sure, He is abnormal: if He were normal like us, he would not be a God-man, an awakener of the spiritual consciousness of humanity.
