The Masters Death and After – 02

One day in September the Master’s throat bled. Some of the older disciples thought it prudent to remove him to Calcutta for facility of treatment and nursing. Accordingly a house was rented at Shyampukur, in the northern part of the city, where he took up his residence in October. Sarada Devi continued to live at Dakshineswar. There she led a quiet life without realizing the real significance of the Master’s illness. She was then thirty-two years old. She utilized her leisure time in brushing up on her reading, which had been interrupted after she left Kamarpukur. A girl from the neighbourhood visited her every now and then and gave her lessons. Sarada Devi rewarded her with vegetables and fruits from the garden. Thus she learnt to read in Bengali the Ramayana, the Mahabharata, and similar books. But she could not write. Once, many years after, pressed by a disciple for an autograph, she made great efforts to scrawl her name but did not succeed.
