The senior Gopal and Latu conveyed to Sarada Devi the doctor’s directions about Sri Ramakrishna’s special diet, and she prepared it herself. The doctor prescribed a variety of food, such as boiled cream of wheat, which had to be strained, rice gruel, and meat and clam stew. When asked to prepare the clam stew, Sarada Devi objected, remarking that clams were living creatures and that she had seen them moving in the water. How could she kill them? Thereupon Sri Ramakrishna said: ‘How is that? I shall eat the stew and you can’t prepare it?’ She made up her mind to carry out his wish. She was relieved, however, by a revelation in which she saw that God alone is both the killer and the killed.
