In spite of his excruciating pain and emaciated physical condition, Sri Ramakrishna unceasingly ministered to the spiritual needs of his disciples and devotees. He talked to them by signs or in whispers. On the first of January he felt a little better and about three in the afternoon went downstairs accompanied by an attendant and slowly walked to the garden. There he saw a number of householder devotees, some seated under the trees and some strolling about. Suddenly as they gathered around him and saluted him by touching his feet, he entered into an ecstatic mood and touched their heads and chests, saying: ‘May your spiritual consciousness be awakened.’ The devotees were beside themselves with joy and each one was blessed with a spiritual experience.
