The Masters Death and After – 13

Sri Ramakrishna’s physical condition deteriorated greatly. Finding medical treatment ineffective, Sarada Devi resolved to seek divine help. With that end in view she went to the famous Shiva temple at Tarakeswar, on the other side of the Ganges, determined to fast and keep vigil until she obtained the remedy through intercession with Shiva. After passing two days without food and sleep, on the third night she suddenly saw, in a vision, a heap of baked earthen pots, which were soon reduced to powder with a resounding crash, as if struck by a heavy cudgel. A voice rang out in her mind: ‘Who is one’s husband? Who are one’s relatives? For whose sake am I about to commit suicide here?’ At once she felt a vast detachment and resigned herself to God. After quenching her thirst with a handful of water she returned to Dakshineswar. The moment the Master saw her he asked: ‘Well, did you get anything? Nothing is real – isn’t that so?’
