The Masters Death and After – 21

Soon a problem arose about the feasibility of maintaining the garden house and the disposal of the Master’s relics and ashes. Narendra and the other young disciples wanted to keep the house a little longer, but many of the older householder disciples who bore the expenses advised that Sarada Devi should move elsewhere. They further said that the ashes should be preserved at the garden house of Ramachandra Datta, one of Sri Ramakrishna’s foremost householder disciples, and that the young disciples should go back to their homes. But the disciples had a different idea. They wanted to buy a plot of land on the bank of the Ganges and take the ashes there in a copper vessel. They had, however, no money with which to buy the land. After a great deal of argument it was decided that some of the ashes should be buried at Ramachandra’s place and the rest kept, for the time being at Balaram’s house and regularly worshipped. Sarada Devi heard of the heated controversy between the older and the young disciples, but did not take sides. She only gave a long sigh and said to Golap-Ma: ‘Such a golden person has left us, and now, Golap, they are quarrelling over his ashes!’
