It was at Vrindavan that Holy Mother had her first direct intimation of her future mission. One day Sri Ramakrishna appeared before her and asked her to give Swami Yogananda formal initiation. He even told her the mantra with which she should initiate him. Holy Mother thought it was a freak of her mind. She even felt embarrassed to think that people might criticize her action and say: ‘See, she has already started to make disciples.’ But the vision was repeated on each of the two days following. On the third day, she said to the Master: ‘I do not even speak to Yogen. How can I initiate him?’ Sri Ramakrishna asked her to have Yogin-Ma with her at the time of initiation. Swami Yogananda also, in a vision, received similar instruction from the Master. At last the Mother gave him the initiation and Swami Yogananda thus became her first disciple. This was the beginning of a new chapter in her life. She stayed at Vrindavan for a year, practised meditation with clocklike regularity, and experienced many visions and ecstasies about which, however, she remained silent. How happy she was! She once remarked that she and Yogin-ma would be so absorbed in meditation that they did not notice flies sitting on their eyes and causing sores in them.
