While coming from Calcutta, the party, for want of money, had to walk about sixteen miles from the railway station. Holy Mother became extremely tired and hungry, and Golap-Ma hastily prepared a simple meal by the roadside. As the Mother tasted this plain food she said to the cook: ‘Golap, what nectar you have prepared!’ Soon after their arrival at Kamarpukur her companions returned to Calcutta. Lakshmi decided to live at Dakshineswar with her brother Ramlal, who was working there as the priest of the Kali temple. Holy Mother was left alone at her husband’s parental home. There she spent about a year (1887-1888), under most trying circumstances, suffering from poverty, loneliness, and people’s uncharitable criticism.
