Anguish and Reassurances – 03
At Cossipore Sri Ramakrishna had told his nephew about Sarada Devi’s living permanently at Kamarpukur. Ramlal said rather indifferently: ‘She may live anywhere she likes.’ At this casual remark the Master scolded him and said: ‘What do you mean? You are a man and still can say such a thing!’ Ramlal not only did nothing to be of any help to Holy Mother; he actually made her pecuniary difficulties much worse. After the Master’s death, the temple authorities gave her a monthly allowance of seven rupees. While she was living at Vrindavan, Ramlal told them that Sri Ramakrishna’s wealthy devotees were looking after her and that she did not need any other help, and the paltry allowance was stopped. Narendranath pleaded with them in vain. When the Mother heard of it she said, in a spirit of utter dispassion: ‘Let them stop the allowance. I have lost the Mater, what shall I do with their money?’ Some of the householder devotees talked of helping her, but it remained a mere pious wish.
