Anguish and Reassurances – 04

Sri Ramakrishna had asked Sarada Devi at Cossipore to live at Kamarpukur, and said: ‘Grow some greens, eat boiled rice and greens, and repeat Hari’s1 (1 A name of God) name.’ what hard days she had to face there! There were times when she had only rice, without even a pinch of salt to flavour it. But she put up with all this, remembering Sri Ramakrishna’s admonition that she must not stretch her hand to anyone for money. Most of the young disciples of the Master were then living as wandering monks. They had no idea of her difficulties. Swami Saradananda2 (2 A disciple of the Master who later became the Secretary of the Ramakrishna Mission and assumed responsibility for Holy Mother. His premonastic name was Sarat) once remarked: ‘We did not dream that Mother did not have the means to buy even salt.’
