Anguish and Reassurances – 05

We have already said that Ramlal and Lakshmi lived at Dakshineswar. Sivaram, their younger brother, also lived with them. Sivaram was attached to Holy Mother, who was a sort of godmother to him, and later he visited her now and then at Jayrambati. She had nothing in common with her niece and nephews. Ramlal did not pay her any attention. One day during this period he came to Kamarpukur and made a drastic change in the affairs of the family. He left the house used by Sri Ramakrishna to Holy Mother, and made arrangements about the property and the worship of the family deity. Holy Mother felt terribly alone and helpless, but she steeled herself to face the situation. Her garment was a mere rag. Her mother, Shyamasundari, who was herself in financial distress, during one of the Mother’s visits to Jayrambati wept to see her in such straitened circumstances and begged her repeatedly to life with her. But Holy Mother did not agree and only said: ‘I am now going back to Kamarpukur. We shall see what the Lord ordains for me.’
