Anguish and Reassurances – 12

Holy Mother led a quiet life at Kamarpukur. Her financial condition was now slightly improved. A little help came from some of the Master’s devotees in Calcutta, and she also received her share of paddy from the family. Thus the fear of starvation was removed. As the occasion arose, she entertained holy men, guests, and beggars, and the devotees of the Master who now and then visited her. Further, she made the necessary repairs on her house and bore her share of expense for the worship of the family deity. But she had to work hard. Her mother at last persuaded her to make Jayrambati her permanent home and live with her and her brothers. But still she visited Kamarpukur from time to time. Asked about her reason for leaving Sri Ramakrishna’s house, where the Master had asked her to live permanently, she once said: ‘At Kamarpukur I missed the Master very much. It is a very painful experience. That is why I did not live there.’ Another reason for her living at Jayrambati was, as we shall see later, to look after the brothers’ families.
