Holy Mother By Swami Nikhilananda: 191

Anguish and Reassurances – 15

At Nilambar Babu’s house, Swami Adbhutananda assisted Swami Yogananda in looking after Holy Mother’s comfort. Swami Abhedananda also visited her there and one day recited to her a hymn he had composed in her honour. Shortly after, she went on a pilgrimage to Puri, accompanied by Swami Brahmananda, Swami Yogananda, Swami Saradananda, Yogin-Ma and her mother, Golap-Ma, and Lakshmi. They reached Puri in the early part of November 1888. Immediately after their arrival they visited Jagannath1 (1 Literally, ‘Lord of the Universe,’ an epithet of Krishna. The images of Krishna, His brother Balarama, and His sister Subhadra are worshipped in the shrine.) in the famous temple of Puri. One day Holy Mother carried under her sari a photograph of Sri Ramakrishna and uncovered it before the images on the altar, since the Master had never come to Puri. She believed that a picture is the same as person it depicts. Later she remarked: ‘I saw, as it were, a Lion among men seated on the sacred altar, and I was attending Him as His handmaiden.’
