Holy Mother By Swami Nikhilananda: 206
In a Domestic Setting – 03
The following year Holy Mother suffered another bereavement, in the death of her mother, Shyamasundari, whom her devoted disciples affectionately called ‘Grandmother.’ Even on the morning of her passing away the old lady helped in husking paddy and purchased vegetables in the village for the family. Suddenly she felt sick and lay down on the porch of the house of one of her sons. Addressing a disciple of Holy Mother, she said: ‘I am feeling dizzy; perhaps this is the end.’ Holy Mother and the other members of the family rushed to her side. She expressed the desire to eat pumpkin curry, and Holy Mother assured her she would cook it for her when she got well. Shyamasundari knew her last moment had arrived. She wanted to drink some water, and Holy Mother poured Ganges water into her mouth. She quietly breathed her last and Holy Mother wept loudly, like any worldly person. The usual funeral rites were performed with pomp, and the guests were fed with many dishes, including the pumpkin curry.
