Holy Mother By Swami Nikhilananda: 210

In a Domestic Setting – 07

The three other brothers, Prasanna, Kalikumar, and Barada, lived to old age. After their father’s death they spent some years with relatives but later returned to their ancestral home and lived with their sister until they built they own houses.

Kalikumar was Shyamasundari’s third son. A man of short temper, he never got along with his brothers Prasanna and barada. He loved power and wanted to control the family affairs. His nieces were afraid of him. In the course of time two sons were born to him who were married at an early age. Kalikumar built his own house at Jayrambati and earned his livelihood through priestly duties. Holy Mother took him to Puri on pilgrimage.

Kalikumar often pestered Holy Mother for money. When she lived in Calcutta or elsewhere, the brothers would write to her about their pecuniary wants. Once a disciple said to her: ‘Mother, please give him plenty of money and pray to the Master about it. Let them have their enjoyment to the full. Then perhaps they will show dispassion.’ Holy Mother replied: ‘Will they ever have dispassion? Nothing will satisfy them. Do worldly people ever feel satisfied? My brothers tell me nothing but their woes. Kali always demands money. Prasanna is now imitating him. Barada hardly makes any demands. He says: “Where will sister get money?”’ On another occasion she said: ‘Their sole thought is money. They always say: “Give us money, give us money.” Not even absent-mindedly have they ever asked for knowledge and devotion. All right, let them have what they want.’
