Constant friction raged among the three brothers. Each tried to obtain their sister’s favour for purely selfish purposes. There was always rivalry among them as to who could extort the most from her. This caused Holy Mother worry and annoyance, which she endured with infinite patience, at the same time helping them financially to the best of her ability. At last she realized that the partition of the family estate was the only thing that might pacify them. Swami Saradananda was asked to arbitrate. He arrived at Jayrambati in March 1909. But the arbitration, too, proved a difficult task. Kalimumar wanted to keep all the documents in his custody, but Prasanna did not agree. The two brothers became so heated that they were about to start a scuffle, but it was somehow stopped but Swami Saradananda. Holy Mother looked on with utter detachment. When asked where she would live after partition, she replied: ‘Rats make holes, providing places for snakes to live in. I shall stay a few days with Prasanna and a few days with Kali.’ In fact, until she moved to her own newly built cottage in 1916, she used to stay mostly with Prasanna. The special reason for this was that she had to look after his two young daughters.
