Holy Mother By Swami Nikhilananda: 225

In a Domestic Setting – 22

Her compassion knew no bounds and was totally devoid of selfishness. She often said: ‘If one is without kindness, how can one be called a human being?’ The following two incidents illustrate the nature of her compassion and love.

One day Holy Mother was talking at Jayrambati to a devotee who was a high-caste brahmin. His sacred thread, the sign of his noble linage, was conspicuous. Just then a young man, who happened to be an untouchable, arrived and begged for initiation. At her village she carefully observed the local traditions regarding caste, and so she expressed her hesitation to accept the untouchable as a disciple. Thereupon the young man became angry and said in an excited voice: ‘Don’t you remember that evening1 when you were travelling alone through a lonely meadow and encountered a highwayman who was an untouchable? Out of sheer fear you addressed him as ‘Father.” And now you are objecting to being the mother of another untouchable!’ Holy Mother burst into a laugh. She brushed aside the consideration of caste and out of kindness agreed to initiate him.
(1 Referring to her encounter, on her way to Dakshineswar, with the highwayman whom she addressed as ‘Father.’)
