Holy Mother By Swami Nikhilananda: 227

In a Domestic Setting – 24

Holy Mother lived the life of a householder. People saw her involved in family affairs and identified with the weal and woe of her relatives. She taught them the minutest details of their household duties. But few realized her total non-attachment to the world and her relatives. Even Yogin-Ma, one of her intimate companions, once felt some doubt about it and said to herself: ‘Sri Ramakrishna was the embodiment of renunciation, and Mother is engrossed in the world, preoccupied day and night with the thought of her brothers, sisters-in-law, and nephews and nieces.’ One day, soon after, she was seated on the bank of the Ganges, meditating, when Sri Ramakrishna appeared in a vision before her. The Master said: ‘Do you see what is being carried by the water of the Ganges?’ Yogin-Ma saw the corpse of a newly-born baby, smeared with blood, and with the placenta still attached to it. She also saw that thousands of people were offering worship to the holy water of the river. The Master said to Yogin-Ma: ‘Can anything make the Ganges impure? Regard her [meaning Holy Mother] in the same way. Never have any doubt about her. Remember she is not different from this [meaning himself].’
