Holy Mother By Swami Nikhilananda: 233
In a Domestic Setting – 30
After the Master’s death the people of Jayrambati regarded Holy Mother as one of themselves. Some, no doubt, regarded her as an unfortunate woman – a poor widow, without children and dependant on her brothers. But before long they were surprised to see how many people visited her from far and near with all sorts of gifts. Some even became jealous. One woman remarked: ‘Certainly she is a lucky woman, with disciples and attendants, and money and other gifts pouring at her feet. If her brahminical lineage brings her all these gifts, then why should we be deprived of them? We, too, are brahmins.’ Some of the villagers on various pretexts tried to extract money from her.
