Chapter 11 – Radhu : 078

The party arrived at Koalpara at eleven o’clock at night. They planned to stay there for a day or two and then proceed to Jayrambati. Radhu slept well for two nights and wanted to live in that quiet village. But soon her illness was aggravated and she began to make many demands. Holy Mother had to bring ice for her from Vishnupur. Various treatments, including supernatural ones, were tried. Holy Mother performed her immediate duties to Radhu but maintained an attitude of non-attachment. When someone suggested that a specialist should be brought to look after Radhu’s delivery, Holy Mother said: ‘Dogs and jackals live in the jungle. Do they not give birth to their young ones there?’ In 1919 Radhu safely gave birth to a male child, who was named Vanavihari on account of his being born in the jungle (vana) of Koalpara; his pet name was Vanu.
