The human teacher must possess qualifications to discharge his task. The Upanishads emphasize that knowledge and realization of Brahman are the primary qualification. Knowledge, which belongs to the domain of intellect, is necessary to dispel the disciple’s doubts. Furthermore, the guru must be sinless and free from worldly motive. He should act as a friend of those who, with humility, seek his help. An ocean of infinite compassion, he wants the welfare of the disciple, and helps, unnoticed and unheralded, in unfolding his spirituality, as the spring unfolds leaves and blossoms after the cold and bleak months of winter. No wonder these qualifications of an ideal teacher are fully found only in God-men, who visit earth from time to time. Holy mother possessed them fully. But an aspirant can obtain help even from a lesser teacher. It would be folly for a beginner in science or art to refuse to start his study unless he obtained the guidance from an Einstein or a Leonardo. Even if such a teacher were available, would the beginner be able to understand him? How many contemporaries of Christ and Ramakrishna availed themselves of the presence of these exalted teachers? The right teacher always appears in proper time to help the qualified pupil.
