Chapter 12 – Spiritual Ministry : 005
An illumined teacher, endowed with knowledge of God, assumes responsibility for the disciple’s sins and often himself suffers on his account, physically and mentally. The relationship between such a teacher and student is eternal and cannot be severed by death. He stands by the pupil both here and hereafter and does not cease guiding him until he is liberated from the bondage, delusion, and suffering of the world. He is the pupil’s father – more real than an earthly father, who gives birth only to the physical body – for it is he who gives him spiritual birth. When, however, a blind teacher guides a blind student both find themselves in a ditch. As Sri Ramakrishna said, when a bullfrog is seized by an ordinary water-snake, there is no end of suffering for both. The frog can be neither easily swallowed nor ejected and it goes on croaking. But then it seized by a cobra, its agony stops are three croaks at the most. Holy Mother suffered intensely, as we shall presently see, when people with sinful minds touched her feet. When, on the other hand, an earnest seeker touched her feet she felt soothed in both body and mind.
