Chapter 12 – Spiritual Ministry : 013

When a disciple arrived at her home after a long journey, many times she herself fanned him to cool him off. She often nursed disciples when they were sick. She knew how difficult it was to come to Jayrambati, especially for people accustomed to the comforts of the city. She once remarked that it was rather easier to visit Gaya, Benares, and other sacred places than Jayrambati. She always insisted that the disciples spend at least two or three days at her home. As good food was scarce in the village, she procured fish, fruit, or vegetables from distant villages. Girish Ghosh at one time spent several days at the Mother’s home. He was surprised to see clean linen on his bed every night and on inquiry found out that the Mother herself daily washed his sheets and pillow slips in the village tank. Even in her Calcutta house she would not allow any devotees who arrived at meal time to go away without taking food. This often exasperated Golap-Ma, who was the housekeeper, because she had to provide meals for the unexpected guests. She would complain to Holy Mother: ‘You are a fine person, indeed! You entertain anybody and everybody who comes to you and addresses you as “Mother.”’ Holy Mother brushed off the complaint with a smile. When a disciple referred to all she did for the of disciples and the gratification of her relatives, she remarked: ‘I have done more than is necessary so as to set up a model for others.’
