Once Swami Arupananda, a monastic disciple, had to go to a neighbouring village on business and did not return till late in the afternoon. When he came back he found that the Mother had not taken her midday meal. The disciple complained about her fasting when her own health was bad. But she replied: ‘You have not taken your meal; how could I?’ One day she remarked to a disciple: ‘If a thorn hurts the sole of your foot, I feel as if a plough-share had gone into my heart.’
