But all this protest against injustice did not interfere in the lightest with her innate generosity. It was the time of the Durga Puja2 (2 Worship of Durga, an aspect of the Divine Mother) when new clothes are presented to both men and women. Holy Mother asked one of her Brahmachari attendants to buy clothes for her nieces. The Brahmachari was a patriot and he purchased coarse native clothes. But the girls wanted fine English stuff and refused to wear what was bought. There was a heated argument. The Mother listened to the discussion and said with a smile: ‘The English people too are my children. I must live with all. I cannot be exclusive.’ She asked the attendant to buy the British goods.
