A disciple has recorded a striking example of this phenomenon at Jayrambati. Holy Mother’s attendant had gone out on some business. After his return he found her lying on a straw mat on the verandah. At the sight of the attendant she said: ‘A rather elderly man came here. Seeing him from a distance, I entered my room and sat on my bed. He was eager to touch my feet. Though I protested, he saluted me by touching my feet by force, as it were. Since then I have been almost at the point of death because of a pain in my feet and my stomach. I washed my feet three or four times; still I cannot get rid of the burning. Had you been here, you could have forbidden him to touch my feet.’ Many instances like this could be recounted.
