We shall now briefly describe Holy Mother’s attitude towards the life of monks and of householders, and towards marriage. In her one finds all these three elements present. She herself was married. Surrounded by relatives, she lived, a householder’s life. But at the same time she was a living demonstration of the monastic ideals of compassion, service, purity, non-attachment to the world, and constant communion with the Supreme Spirit.
There were both monks and householders among the Mother’s disciples. She imparted the spirit of brahmacharya and sannyasa to the members of the Ramakrishna Order, sometimes giving them the appropriate robe, and asked them to perform the formal ceremonies under the guidance of Swami Brahmananda, who was then the President of the Ramakrishna Order.
