Scanbass Value

Hello, a friend of mine wants me to sell his Hagstrom Scanbass, and I need to know what it's worth. It's a beautiful instrument, but I just can't seem to talk him out of it. Now some info on the bass:
It's the fretted model, w/ a dark transparent red finish.
The only things missing are the bridge and pickup covers and the knobs. It plays well, and has been very well maintained.
The serial # is 53 023119
I haven't been able to find info on what year it was made.
He got this bass from his dad in it's current condition, he didn't know enough about guitars to realize the knobs were missing, he just assumed that the shafts of the pots WERE the knobs! He seems to be very careful with it and it shows in the meticulus condition

Could someone here please tell me what it is worth? (I'm in the US) also, it would be neat to know what year it was made, ect.
Thanks!
Austin Ritz

Re: Scanbass Value

This so difficult when there are not many up for sale.

It aught to be worth a lot of money as they are great basses - apart from the cover over strings that some people can't get on with, but then it can be removed, which is what seems to be the case here.

Things like knobs and covers missing do affect the value for Hagstrom collectors, but these bits can still be found with perseverance!

I own a fretless version in the same dark wine red translucent colour, and love it.

Other things that effect value are this time of year, these current times, whether someone is looking for one and as I say completeness.

To my personal mind these are worth much more than the market tends to value them at as not so many people have played one.

In good condition, complete and with case I'd value it between £400 and £500 GBP. It deserves to be more. You have some bits missing, so what does that mean? Its down to buyer and seller.

It was made in a batch that ran from 1977 to 1978.

There you go, I've broken all my rules for valuing and dating. Must be something in the air.

Whatever happens if it is in good condition, then it really should be looked after. There won't be others like them.

Re: Scanbass Value

Hi Austin,
unfortunately the Scanbass is traded far below it's real value. To my experience they are sold around $600. If you're really lucky you will get more, but considering the missing parts maybe even less. Good luck.
Best Regards,
Manfred

Re: Scanbass Value

Austin,

I would say that you would be best off selling it locally to avoid the postage surplus cost that will be required to get it shipped to the US or Europe.

Go ahead and just place your add here

Someone may be looking for your bass.

Otherwise list it on to ebay, YouTube, www.talkbass.com or equivalent site.
