Art, bikes and fishing

Man combines passions to create sculptures

Jason Messier combines his passion for art with his love of Harley-Davidson motorcycles and fishing.

His most recent sculpture, "A Biker's day of Fishing," is currently on display in his parents' front yard, 12 Lyn-Den Drive N.E.

The 11-foot-high sculpture features an orange and white fishing bobber and bluish/purplish dragonfly. The body of the dragonfly is a motorcycle tank.

"It's just sculpture now, but it would fit on a bike," Messier, 28, said.

The dragonfly has a wingspan of about four feet. It is about 3½ feet in length.

The wings feature an intricate flame design.

Messier began work on the steel sculpture in March and took two months to complete it.

He expects to display it outside his parents' home for a few more weeks before moving it to Topeka, Kan., for an outdoor sculpture show there.

The city of Iowa City said it will display a similar, smaller sculpture of Messier's, about five feet in height, on the Peninsula Park Showcase Pad.

Marcia Bollinger, neighborhood and public art coordinator for the city, said she expects to have the sculpture up about Sept. 1. The sculpture will be up for about a year, she said.

"It's a method of getting young artists' work out there," Bollinger said of the pad. "I think the dragonfly is just perfect for that location."

Messier recently completed a master's degree of fine art from the University of Iowa. He also holds a Bachelor of Art degree from UI.

Many of his sculpture ideas have come from car and bike shows.

"I don't like going to museums," Messier said. "I would rather go to a car show -- somewhere you can go and talk to people about how they do things."
