The Priest and the Pirate

Father Ramon Cruz needs a ride to Cuba to assist locals being persecuted. He tries to hire a ship captain to take him. Joe Morgan is a former rumrunner who is out of business now since prohibition has been repealed. Times are hard and money is in short supply. He owes a lot of people who have been threatening him. At first, he refuses but reluctantly accepts the Father’s offer to go to Cuba.

After agreeing to take Father Cruz Morgan was contacted by another group asking if he would take a shipment of arms to Cuba to Antonio Guiteras. He was planning to lead a revolution against Bautista.
Morgan tries to talk Cruz out of going, He offers his money back, but Cruz will not relent. He hops on board and Morgan reluctantly sets sail for Cuba

Morgan tries to keep the secret as long as possible. As they get close to Cuba they are intercepted, there is a gunfight and they narrowly escape. Morgan comes clean and tells Cruz about the guns. He is shocked and tries to convince Morgan what a bad idea this is. Morgan assures him he doesn’t care about Guiteres or his politics. He just needs the money to pay off some old debts.

Cruz tries to counsel him, but he doesn’t want to hear about it. He has had a bad experience with the church and doesn’t know what to believe anymore. All he cares about right now is staying alive. He tells him he has to reach a tiny port near Las Tumbas. He makes the exchange then and the father can be on his way.
