Holy Mother By Swami Nikhilananda: 105
In The March of Events – 17
Sri Ramakrishna depended entirely upon Sarada Devi for his physical comforts, especially for his meals. According t social customs among orthodox Hindus, a Hindu woman is considered unclean for three days during her monthly period and is debarred from cooking and performing other household duties. When Sarada Devi for that reason could not cook for the Master, he used to get his food from the kitchen of the Kali temple. That food invariably disagreed with him. One day when his stomach was upset, he sent for Sarada Devi and asked her the reason for her not preparing his meals. When she explained, he said: ‘Who told you that a woman cannot cook for those three days? You must cook for me as usual. There is nothing wrong about it. Please tell me what is impure in a person – the skin, the flesh, the bones, the marrow? It is the mind that makes one pure or impure. There is no impurity outside the mind.’
