Spiritual Practices – 20
In concluding this chapter it will be appropriate to discuss the necessity for the practice of spiritual disciplines by Sarada Devi, who was a manifestation of Divinity.
All the major religions, as well as saints, prophets, and mystics, emphasize the need of spiritual discipline for spiritual aspirants for the purification of their hearts. But what about Incarnations of God, who are born free and who remain unstained by the blemishes of the world? Why should they practise spiritual disciplines like ordinary human beings? The mystery of the Divine Incarnation seems to lie in the fact that though God is eternally pure, enlightened, free; though, in essence, He is Existence-Consciousness-Bliss Absolute; and though He is incorporeal, nameless, and formless Spirit, yet through his own inscrutable potency He assumes a human form without any compulsion from outside or any desire to fulfil a selfish purpose. The entire meaning of the embodiment of the Divine is to show man the way out of the labyrinth of the world. God becomes man so that man may become God. When, in course of time, righteousness declines and wickedness prevails, God becomes incarnated to restore spiritual values.
