The Masters Death and After – 05

At Shyampukur Sarada Devi had to live with the Master’s disciples. With the exception of Latu and the senior Gopal, she had never exchanged a word with them. Sri Ramakrishna occupied a large drawing-room on the second floor, and Sarada Devi was given a small adjoining room. The kitchen was situated in a small covered space on the way to the roof. Before three o’clock in the morning, when other inmates were still asleep, she finished her bath in the only bathroom in the house and went to the kitchen. Her sleep at night lasted about three hours. There she meditated, cooked for the Master and his attendants, and carried out her other household duties. When the Master’s meal was ready, she sent word to the devotees. Whenever convenient, they left Sri Ramakrishna’s room so that she could herself bring down his food and supervise his eating. Thus she lived practically invisible to the devotees, except Latu and the senior Gopal. Golap-Ma and Lakshmi rendered her occasional help. The inmates of the house were hardly aware of her presence. Four or five disciples, including Narendranath,1 (1 Narendranath Datta, the foremost monastic disciple of Sri Ramakrishna, subsequently world-famous as Swami Vivekananda.) regularly spent the night there attending Sri Ramakrishna. About two months passed but the Master’s illness only became worse. At last, on December, 1885, he was removed to a garden house at Cossipore, a northern suburb of Calcutta, where he could breathe fresh air and enjoy sunlight.
