The Masters Death and After – 24
Soon after her departure for Vrindavan, in the autumn of 1886, most of the young disciples of the Master destined to be monks renounced the world and moved to a small dilapidated house at Baranagore, a northern suburb of Calcutta. There they established a monastery, practised austerities, spent their days in meditation and study, and worshipped the relics of Sri Ramakrishna. The remaining monastic disciples joined them in a short time. From here they set out, from time to time, to lead the life of wandering monks. This monastery gradually developed into the Belur Math, which, as we shall see, was established in 1898 as the permanent headquarters of the monks of the Ramakrishna Order.
