Anguish and Reassurances – 23

Prior to Swami Vivekananda’s sailing for America on May 31, 1893, he was assailed by doubt as to whether he was undertaking the journey to fulfil God’s will or to satisfy his own personal ambition. He had had some supernatural indication of Sri Ramakrishna’s approval of the project, but he wanted a more concrete sign; so he wrote to Holy Mother for her opinion. Instead of feeling worried about the bold adventure on the part of a penniless young man of thirty, unacquainted with the ways of the world, she saw in it the finger of God and gave him her blessings for the accomplishment of his mission. All trace of Swami Vivekananda’s misgivings disappeared. After his triumph in America, he wrote inspiring letters to his brother disciples in India, urging them to broadcast Sri Ramakrishna’s message and dedicate their lives to the service of humanity. One day in 1895 one of these letters were read before Holy Mother, who remarked: ‘Narendra is an instrument in the Master’s hand. It is the Master who is working through Naren. What Naren has said is true; in future his words will be fulfilled.’
