Abhaya’s wife, Surabala, often posed real problems for Holy Mother. Surabala’s mother had died during her childhood and she had lived an unhappy life. After her husband’s death she became a charge of Holy Mother. She gradually developed signs of an unbalanced mind, and after the birth of her daughter, Radharani, her condition became worse. Once in the early hours of the morning she encountered a thief in the kitchen and fainted through fear. From then on she was really insane. As it was impossible for her to take care of her young daughter, Holy Mother took complete responsibility for her. Surabala was a thorn in her side. Holy Mother, unable to bear with her, sometimes remarked: ‘Perhaps I once worshipped Shiva with thorny bel leaves and that is why I have this thorn.
