Holy Mother By Swami Nikhilananda: 228
In a Domestic Setting – 25
At the death of Maku’s son Holy Mother wept like any other householder. She realized how much people suffer when their children or other relatives pass away. A disciple asked her: ‘Mother, why did you weep like an ordinary person at the death of that child?’ She replied: ‘I live as a householder. I must taste the fruit of the tree of the world. That is why I weep. Sri Ramakrishna once remarked: “When God is incarnated as a human body, he acts exactly like a man. He feels the same hunger, thirst, sickness, grief, and fears as others do. Even Brahman weeps when caught in the trap of the five elements!”1 (1 Referring to earth, water, fire, air, and akasha (or space), which constitute all physical objects.)
