Swami Premananda1 (1 A monastic disciple of Sri Ramakrishna) often exhorted the young monks of the Belur Math to emulate Holy Mother’s example. Once he said to them: ‘Many people worship her photograph. But in spite of her rheumatism she herself does not accept service from others. How tirelessly she serves the visitors at Jayrambati, known or unknown! She fetches water from the tank and even walks a mile to procure milk and good vegetables. Often she washes their dishes after their meals.’ When the present writer one day told Swami Premananda that the Mother sat by his side when ate his meals, and that she herself prepared the vegetables, the Swami said in a moved voice: ‘She has set the example of how to lead an ideal life in the world. How non-attached she is in the midst of her manifold tasks! And never forget that she is the embodiment of the Divine Mother of the Universe.’
